With the right introduction and a little bit of training, any canine athlete can become a shed hunter! Though the sport was originally developed with hunting dogs such as Labrador Retrievers or Chesapeake Bays, there are many non-sporting dogs who also participate with great success. If your dog retrieves, is in good shape, and loves the great outdoors, they just may think this is the most fun ever!
Primarily geared towards brand new teams wanting to give Shed Hunting a try, our seminars are also open to dogs who have dabbled in, or already are, shed hunting. We gauge your dog’s experience vis a vis shed hunting, scent work, retrieving or other dog sprts so we can assess the best way to plan our teaching modules and give each dog the individual attention needed to be successful!
Overall, seminars can cover the basics of the sport of Shed Hunting, go over the rules and regulations for both Working and Champion classes and help teams advance in the sport. The dogs will be introduced to the shed and the value of the hunt. Handlers will learn the various regulations around the sport, how to comport themselves during a trial and how to practice with their dogs at home. Advanced level dogs will practice various types of hides, how to handle different conditions and hunts and preparing for trial.
WHO: Dogs can be any age for this introduction and previous nosework or sport experience is not necessary. Dogs should be in good physical shape and a desire to retrieve and work is helpful.
