This class is designed to guide the performance dog and handler through the basics of canine fitness and send them on a path to improve strength, flexibility, and endurance for their chosen activities and sports. Just like us, dogs need to be fit, especially if we are asking them to perform sports and other exerting activities like running, biking, hiking, etc. Improved fitness provides strength, flexibility, increased endurance/stamina, speed, and best of all, injury prevention!
Upon completion of the six-hour program, the team should have a solid understanding of how to get started on their fitness journey and improve their teamwork and performance through better health and fitness. The team will also, if they should choose to accept it, earn their AKC FitDog Level 1.
Topics that will be explained and taught will be foundation exercises for the building blocks of canine performance fitness. We will discuss warm-ups and cool-downs, how to improve flexibility, and what sorts of holistic factors affect a dog’s overall fitness and performance. We will also discuss important fitness touchstones such as cardio, balance/strength, mental fitness, and confidence building.
Participating dogs need to be cleared by their vet to start a fitness program if they have any pre-existing conditions or injuries. This is NOT a rehab class. Dogs must be of performance age for their sports and veteran / retired dogs are welcome.
This class may be run as six one-hour sessions, two three-hour sessions, or as a whole day seminar. See product options for course availability.
